In the Catholic faith prayers take place before the funeral mass and the burial. During this time, those in attendance offer prayers and condolences to the family and observe the scripture through readings and reflections. Eulogies, and other tributes may also be offered during the prayers. You may be able to give your own tribute via Zoom™ by "raising your hand" after the initial tribute.

At the funeral liturgy, the Church will gathers with Janice's family and friends to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend Janice unto God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the Paschal Mystery. The funeral liturgy is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief.

The liturgy begins at the doors of the church, precisely where infant baptism or the catechumenal rites begin. There will be the baptismal pall and the paschal candle. The liturgy concludes with a final farewell to Janice as we entrust her to the tender and merciful embrace of God. During this rite, Janice will again be sprinkled with holy water and incensed. The sprinkling is a reminder that through baptism Janice was marked for eternal life and incensation signifies respect for the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.

A procession is then formed and the body is accompanied to the place of committal. This final procession of the funeral rite mirrors the journey of human life as a pilgrimage to God's kingdom of peace and light, the new and eternal Jerusalem.

The rite of committal is the final act of the community of faith in caring for the body of Janice. In committing Janice to her resting place, the our community will express its hope that, with all who have gone before marked with the sign of faith, Janice awaits the glory of the resurrection.

The last concrete act we will do for Janice in this world — is the Committal, the burial Janice's remains. The relationships, bonds and "communion" we build with one another in faith are not broken by death. Resting in a holy place with our brothers and sisters is a profound statement of that belief.

The Rite of Committal is the final liturgy. Like the Prayers, the Rite of Committal makes use of Scripture, a few words of hope by the Priest, intercessions and prayers.

A Catholic cemetery is a sacred place of honour and respect for those who have died. It is a memorial to all who are interred there. It is a sacred place where Catholics come to express their grief and hope in the resurrection for their loved ones who have preceded them in death. It is blessed ground, fitting for someone whose body was a temple of the Holy Spirit on earth and now awaits the resurrection from the dead.

To have a Priest present at this final moment is a great source of consolation to those who will now have to continue their journey in life without their beloved Janice.
